What does EN50131-2-6 certification give to customers?

Magnetic contacts are redefined as components for specialist use; for this purpose a professional approach is required from the electrical installer. The instruction sheet becomes an integral part of the qualifying product: each product has a specific instruction sheet with indications that should be followed carefully in order to install the contact according to standards.
For each magnetic contact there exists declared and certified operational and installation distances; these distances are shown in a table on the instruction sheet. Each contact is tested and marked with a serial number or a production-lot ID, and for every contact it is possible trace the operator who assembled it. Cooper CSA also guarantees a high quality of production through the “quality management” and “lean manufacturing” programmes in place at Cooper production sites. Last but not least, a third party (IMQ) certifies and guarantees the construction quality and functionality of our contacts.
How the international scenario has changed with EN50131-2-6 classification. 

 

 The new standard classifies components by safety performance (Degree of Protection) and field of use (Environmental Category).
 
 Degree of Protection
     1. Low risk: Intruders with little knowledge of alarm systems and limited range of tools readily available.
     2. Low-to-medium risk: Intruders with limited knowledge of alarm systems and broad range of tools and accessories.
     3. Medium-to-high risk: Intruders practical in alarm systems with a full range of tools and portable electronic devices..
     4. High risk: Intruders with skills and resources to plan an intrusion and a complete range of equipment and accessories, including tools for the replacement of system components.

Environmental Category
    
I. Indoors, temperature-controlled (such as offices, commercial buildings, residential).
    II. Indoors, temperature not well controlled (such as corridors, lobbies, stairs, stores, warehouses).
   III. Outdoors, but protected against rain and sun, or indoors in extreme conditions.
   IV. Outdoors, exposed to weather.

Security tests

Operating distances of opening and closing contacts are checked and certified for all products of the range. All distances are tested and certified for all axis stated in the instruction sheet; only operating distances along the function axis declared on the instruction sheets are certified. Access resistance in the detector is checked for the contacts of grade 2 or 3; magnetic interference tests are also implemented for all grade 3 contacts.
